Furano Region's famous 'Hanabito Kaido': The Flower Drive
Our region's famous 'Flower Drive' runs from Furano to Shimukappu along National Route 237.
The spectacular panorama of seasonal blooms runs from spring through fall.
Daffodils, poppies and lupins bloom from May into June, lavender and lilies from July through August, and sunflowers, salvias and cosmos from August and into September.
The most famous of all of our blooms, lavender, can be viewed in expansive fields at several locations in and around Furano.
Every summer, large numbers of visitors are attracted to Furano and our surrounding region to view our spectacular flower-farming season. The majority come to see our lavender, that usually starts blooming in late June and reaches its peak from around mid-July to early August. Our later flowering varieties of flowers, for example, sunflowers, continue the visual spectacle into fall.
Access to the various flower farms and viewing sites is most conveniently provided by hire car, but access is also provided by bus and train, including special services that operate specifically to provide access to the areas during the season. Taxi charters can also be arranged.
The most famous sites along our Flower Drive are 'Farm Tomita' and its neighbouring 'Lavender East' lavender fields. Farm Tomita used to be one of many lavender producers in Hokkaido, but it ended up being the last commercial farm to remain once the local industry gradually closed down in the '60s and '70s due to the impact of cheaper imports.
Farm Tomita is free to enter and besides its lavender and other flower fields, has many cafes and shops that sell a wide range of lavender and other dried flower related products. The farm gets exceptionally busy during the peak July/August season.
